What is the Average Fine for Reckless Driving in Virginia

Reckless Driving in Virginia Average Fine

What is the average fine for reckless driving in Virginia? Every case is different and every court is different. Those are two biggest and most important truths when it comes to Virginia reckless driving by speed. I take phone calls ALL THE TIME from people in locations where I don't practice. When I tell them I don't go there, they often try to keep me on the phone and ask about their case. It is difficult to answer the question about the average fine for Virginia reckless driving.

I politely try to let them know that to continue the conversation is a waste of their time and mine. The reason is that EVERY COURT IS DIFFERENT. Every judge is different. And they are different at different speeds as well. For that reason, this question is difficult to answer. I am going to do my best to provide some basic and very general guidance based on the courts I routinely practice in.

So, What is the Average Fine for Reckless Driving in Virginia?

By far the two biggest factors that drive the average fine for Virginia reckless driving are (1) the speed the officer said you were going, AND (2) your driving record. A third factor is sometimes what your charge gets reduced to, or if it gets reduced at all.

Leavitt & Martin specializes in Virginia reckless driving law and Virginia traffic cases. We have personally handled THOUSANDS of cases. Here are some rough estimates and ranges based on courts we go to:

Virginia reckless driving by speed:

81 mph to 85 mph: Average fine is usually $120 on the low end up to $300-400 on the higher end.
85 mph to 89 mph: Average fine where we practice is: $150 on the low end up to $400-450 on the higher end

That is not to say your actual fine could not be lower or higher than these ranges. But if you were to average out the fines for Virginia reckless driving for the courts we practice in then these would be pretty accurate. Keep in mind these fine amounts do not include court costs which usually range from $61-96 on average.

Virginia reckless driving by speed:

90 mph to 100 mph: Average fine is $300-350 on the low end and $500-1000 on the higher end.
100 mph and up: Average fine is $500-1000 but these can easily max out at $2500.

Higher speed cases in Virginia for reckless driving are inherently more challenging to predict the fine/costs. If you have a ticket in one of the locations we practice, we can give a MUCH better estimate of your fine based on what court your case will be in, how fast they said you were driving, and how many tickets you have had in the last five to ten years.

These average fines for reckless driving in Virginia are very rough estimates. Without knowing the facts of the case, it is impossible to hone in on a better estimate. Reckless driving is not on the Virginia prepayable list of offenses because it is a criminal misdemeanor.
